Exhausted Leader? Reclaim Your

Well-Being with CoCreate Work

The reason for CoCreate Well

Welcome to CoCreate Well. Recognizing the vital role well-being plays in the workplace we have launched CoCreate Well to empower and support leaders and teams to think about work differently. It is our intention that organizations will begin to think of well-being as a key component of workplace culture.

As we start this series we want to have a word about well-being and leadership. In our work, we have found that leaders often feel burned out. When we are conditioned to feel like we have to choose one over the other, our well-being is usually sacrificed. This leads to overload, and pausing to take a break can feel like a luxury we can’t afford, especially with colleagues and loved ones relying on us.

But ignoring your needs is a dangerous, slippery slope. Although facing challenges is a normal part of life, elevated and chronic stress can make you vulnerable to imbalances within the body, impacting your sleep, energy, and even susceptibility to illness. Over half of U.S. managers experience burnout and, according to the CDC, 60% of adults live with a chronic condition.
La’Kita Williams, the founder and CEO of our growing business, has first-hand experience managing a chronic illness and the well-being of others while leading a company. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2020 after months of sickness, she had to tackle a shocking diagnosis and the early stages of building CoCreate Work.

As a leader yourself, you already know how incredibly challenging it can be to balance running a business or leading a team within the context of your life. This is why this body of work exists, to help provide support and information.

Healthy workplaces have always guided how we approach our work, but now we see it as an imperative. At CoCreate Work, we recognize that well-being isn’t a luxury but a fundamental human right. Its benefits extend far beyond company productivity and growth. Including:

  • Increased energy and immunity
  • Reduced stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Improved relationships
  • More time for passions and hobbies

Greater overall life satisfaction and joy

“Well-being makes you a better parent, partner, community member, and leader, period,” – La’Kita Williams – CEO CoCreate Work

Well-being plays a critical role in every aspect of our lives, but it can be difficult to take the necessary steps. If you are currently feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone. When essential areas of life fall behind, it’s not just your work that suffers. Your physical and mental health, the very foundation of your well-being, takes a hit. Unsurprisingly, many leaders tend to downplay the significant impact of burnout and illness.

Many of us may try to maintain business as usual, believing our symptoms are temporary. But we risk getting trapped in a frustrating and isolating cycle of exhaustion, misalignment, and unhappiness. La’Kita has been there.

In 2019, when she began experiencing pain, nausea, and vertigo, her reality became a revolving door of doctor visits. Despite how she felt, she’d sometimes return to work after emergency room visits, doctors attributing her symptoms to stress — a common but incorrect assumption.

Finally, after months of health struggles, she received her MS diagnosis. Even while absorbing information about the condition and enduring treatment, she still felt immense pressure to maintain her pre-diagnosis work style and tried to fit MS care into her existing work habits.

“Very quickly, I learned this wasn’t sustainable,” La’Kita says. So, she made space to put her health first.

Ambition and well-being are not mutually exclusive. Despite facing health challenges, La’Kita and our team continue to dream up and execute big, culture-shifting goals. We’ve learned that wellness isn’t just for the sake of company productivity and growth either. It’s for flourishing as individuals and as a society.

Who you are as a human and as a leader is intrinsically linked. In addition to your responsibility to lead teams and collaborate with partners, you also have a full life to live. One that’s worth actively participating in. And that starts with taking care of yourself.

When you’re feeling depleted and on the verge of running on fumes, accept that change is necessary. Seek support, create a long-term plan, and make intentional choices that support a lifestyle that feels sustainable. By slowing down and listening to your body, you’ll create space to live a well-rounded life.

We know how daunting it can be to prioritize your wellness. But it’s non-negotiable.

As you embrace this and lead by example, you’ll inspire your team to prioritize their health and happiness, too. You could start with:

  • Intentional habits: Boundary setting, mindfulness practices, daily movement and nourishment, and ample rest.
  • Utilizing resources: Support groups, therapy, and assistive technology.
  • Building a wellness-focused culture: Open communication, efficient meetings, flexible work arrangements, and team-building activities or private training focused on wellness.

Imagine a workplace where this is the norm, fostering growth and work-life harmony. As co-creators, our team is passionate about helping leaders, founders, and visionaries like you achieve this. We collaborate with you to design supportive systems that improve communication, cultivate positive habits, and strengthen your team’s resiliency, allowing everyone to succeed in and outside the office.
